Not only is it disturbing, it’s hurtful. It’s a pet for God’s...
– Linda Rodriguez, whose good-natured horse was surreptitiously and brutally slaughtered for its meat to be sold on the black market at an estimated $7-20 a pound, a practice on the rise in and around Miami, Florida.
I’m glad Ms. Rodriguez is trying to think about the horse’s point of...

Gut Check: The Meat of the Problem →
That’s the title of Ezra Klein’s essay in the Washington Post today, which explains the huge environmental benefits of going meatless.
The debate over climate change has reached a rarefied level of policy abstraction in recent months… But at base, these policies aim to do a simple thing, in a simple way: persuade us to undertake fewer activities that are bad for the atmosphere...

But genuine social change equals lots of personal changes.

A tragically hilarious recap of the Waxman-Markey Bill, and how it’s been raped by the most cowardly people on Earth — members of Congress.

The Cruelest Show on Earth
theinformedvegan:
Kudos to PETA and their amazingly brave and talented undercover investigators for catching the Ringling Bros. Circus in their own lies. Ringling has claimed for years that it does not use the cruel and unnecessary bullhook (club with a hook on the end) to train or reprimand their elephant entertainers. New video evidence shows trainers beating elephants with bullhooks (and...

Animals don’t behave like men… If they have to fight, they fight;...
– A different, desperately needed definition of dignity courtesy of a character in Richard Adams’ Watership Down.
Note: Humans are animals, as vehemently as they might like to deny it when it suits them. So I take ‘animality’ here to mean embracing one’s animal nature and...

It used to be that apocalyptic warnings about the approaching end of time came...
– James Carroll, in an op-ed for the Boston Globe. Of course, by “end of time,” he actually means end of life. Everything shall reap what humanity has sown. Hardly seems fair, does it? Nakedly individualist appeals to ”inalienable rights” of humans (to consume more resources)...

PaperMag.com reviews HERE & The Yolk
A surprise review of our venue and show this past weekend was just posted at PaperMag.com. Thanks to Nell Alk and Gilbert Ng for writing and snapping photos, respectively. You guys rock!
Some highlights:
About HERE: “…precise percussion partnered with tight guitar strumming… impressed everyone within earshot… There’s no denying their skill.” About The Yolk:...

More evidence, as if we needed any, that mainstream Republicans disdain reality, don’t do any proper research, and are motivated primarily by self-interest despite vehement claims to the contrary. Anchor Dennis Kneale appears particularly twisted for having such a loud, arrogant mouth.
CNBC is a joke.

The Thoughtless Police
There were NYPD lining the 6th Ave/14th St uptown FV platform this morning, allowing a police dog to bark incessantly, indiscriminately, and threateningly at anyone who walked by. The policeman holding the dog’s leash made no attempt to calm it, and in fact, given the rigorous training that these dogs undergo, I can only assume that the dog has been trained by NYPD to do this.
Did they have...

Palin resigns, rambles on
I’m sure everyone has tumblogged this already, but I was away from the internet yesterday.
As I thought about this announcement that I would not seek re-election, I thought about how much fun other governors have as lame ducks. They maybe travel around their state, travel to other states, maybe take their overseas international trade missions. I’m not going to put Alaskans through that.

The Times — which would not even permit the use of the word ‘gay’...
– Frank Rich in a NY Times piece about how and why gays are still considered second-class citizens, relating media blackouts on the gay community’s struggle for fairness. The NY Times is such a liberal rag.
