Morality Study Narrows Gap Between Mind and Brain →
therecipe: ageofreason:
Scientists have found a surprising link between magnets and morality. A person’s moral judgments can be changed almost instantly by delivering a magnetic pulse to an area of the brain near the right ear, according to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. […] The fact that scientists can adjust morality with a magnet may be disconcerting to people...

Doc Thompson, substitute host for Glenn Beck’s radio show today, had some very stupid things to say (via ThinkProgress):
For years I’ve suggested that racism was in decline and yeah, there are some, you know, incidents that still happen with regard to racism, but most of the claims I’ve said for years, well, they’re not really real. But I realize now that I was wrong. For I now too...

Think Before You Get OWNED
Back in November 2009, we ran a post about Anthony Bourdain — more specifically, about Ari Solomon’s smackdown of Bourdain’s species-ist inanity. Late to the game as always, an especially careless nitwit decided to comment today (please read the linked post for context):
For the record, Ari Solomon is the actual fucking idiot. This article (if one could call it that) is in many...

Joaquin Phoenix and PETA have produced a mini-expose on the exotic animal skin trade (in this case, snakes, alligators, and other reptiles). The video is very graphic and hard to watch, but it demands our attention, and hopefully many who see it will decide to give up wearing anyone else’s skin for good.

When Paranoia is Unjustified: The U.S. Census
Paranoia isn’t always unjustified. For example, it’s a very safe bet that corporations will do whatever harm to others if it pads their profits and if they believe they won’t face unduly costly consequences.
But paranoia about the U.S. Census is utterly ridiculous. I just filled out my form. It asks for number of people in household, first/last name, date of birth, and...

NYT piece on fur industry excludes blood, guts,...
This New York Times piece by fashion journalist Eric Wilson explaining fur’s recent resurgence on runways has a gaping hole in it: not one sentence is devoted to considering the lives and terrible plights of the non-human animals who are caged, anally and genitally electrocuted, and most often skinned alive for their fur.
(Mr. Wilson did include the tidbit that some designers “said...

Attention All Tumbloggers
Something awesome is so close we can smell it. It carries the sweet scent of victory. But it will not be easily won.
We are behind in this fight, yet there is still hope. We have not yet called upon our secret weapon: you. We have not yet unleashed your awesome fury, your emo angst, your power to like and reblog and kick the rest of the internet’s ass.
Until now.

Me: Do you watch it's always sunny in Philadelphia?
Jess: Nope. Never seen it. What's it about?
Me: Basically there are 5 main characters who own and/or operate a shitty bar in Philly and, though they have their own personality traits, the thing that binds them is that they all share some of the worst social traits of humanity. Selfish, competitive, vindictive, callous.
Jess: I just bought seasons 1 and 2 on Amazon.
Me: Really?
Jess: Yeah!
Me: Just like that?
Jess: YUP

Don McLeroy FIRED
Several weeks ago we posted about how a delusional group of creationist right-wing lunatics have been exerting out-sized influence on public school textbook standards nationwide from their perches on the Texas State Board of Education.
Well, good news: Don McLeroy, their fundamentalist dentist ringleader, has just been fired by Texas voters in favor of a much saner candidate. What’s more,...

re: the bat cartoon
Serwal had some “fucking stupid” points to make in response to the bat cartoon post. His/her comments are in italics and addressed in full and in chronological order, though they have been segmented in order to make our responses clearer.
This is fucking stupid. Not that being a vegetarian, vegan, or anything related is stupid. The reasoning and list used completely ignores the fact...

California may create animal abuse registry
Via SuperVegan, California legislators are set to begin weighing a bill that would create the nation’s first animal abuse registry modeled on widespread sex offender registries. The bill is being spearheaded by the Animal Legal Defense Fund and was introduced by State Senate majority leader Dean Florez.
The idea is simple and familiar: anybody convicted of felony abuse would be listed in a...
