She earned it. She made her escape and now she deserves what she is getting. She will be able to live out her life in a great home.

So said Richard Gentles, a spokesman for Animal Care and Control of New York City, commenting on a cow that escaped from a slaughterhouse in Queens and will now “live out her days free from the prospect of being turned into anyone’s steak.”

You see, she earned it. Those other billions and billions of breathing, feeling, thinking creatures that we breed to torture and slaughter? They don’t “deserve” any better, because they aren’t able to escape during the few moments of their entire lives that they aren’t caged up, or drugged, or made lame due to systematic mutilation and rampant disease.

I wonder why we don’t model our own society after this perverted teleological construction? Why do we not posit humans to be headed to the slaughterhouse from birth, unless a last-minute escape is managed?

The world knows no more vile and delusional creature than Man. So powerful, yet so pathetic. I used to be such a creature. Not anymore.
