“godless”
Pope Benedict forcefully denounced the Holocaust on Friday, telling Israelis that the brutal extermination of Jews by the “godless” Nazi regime would never be forgotten or denied.
His language appeared to lift Jewish disappointment over earlier remarks about the murder of six million Jews by his fellow Germans, which to Israelis had sounded cold and distant. (NY Times)
Everyone knows that the best way to smooth things over with one party is to invent a common enemy (atheists, in this case). A certain German political organization — which, coincidentally, rose to power just before the advent of the Holocaust — used this very tactic to great effect.
As for the “godless”-nazism connection, I suppose that if only the official Nazi party line had included a guy-in-the-sky sort of god, the Nazis would have been as peaceful as newborn lambs. Just like Catholic Inquisitors of the past, eh?

Never leave home without it.
