My god, can you imagine? That would just be the scariest, worst thing in the world.

A fellow employee in reaction to the title of a Dalai Lama book: How to See Yourself As You Really Are.

Sadly, our culture burdens humanity with such delusions of grandeur that holding an accurate view of self would indeed be a terrifying prospect for many.

Far from nourishing us in any sustainable way, those delusions paralyze us in a noxious civilizational brew of extreme narcissism and deep self-loathing — as fantasy is crippled intermittently by reality — and are directly related to all our most immense tragedies and perils.
