The Thoughtless Police

There were NYPD lining the 6th Ave/14th St uptown FV platform this morning, allowing a police dog to bark incessantly, indiscriminately, and threateningly at anyone who walked by. The policeman holding the dog’s leash made no attempt to calm it, and in fact, given the rigorous training that these dogs undergo, I can only assume that the dog has been trained by NYPD to do this.

Did they have reason to believe there would be trouble on the platform this morning? I doubt it, since this is the second seemingly random time I’ve seen them there in nearly a year, and I can contend from daily experience that the platform is plenty safe without tax dollars going to waste on 6 or 7 thoughtless police (or the higher-up who orders them out).

Instead it seems to be a periodic act of intimidation of the general public, which is not only seriously annoying, but doesn’t do anything positive for their image or relationships with the people who pay their salaries in exchange for protection and assistance.

Has anyone seen this at other stations?
