“The almost complete collapse of the richest and most dependable source of Chinook salmon south of Alaska left gloomy fisheries experts struggling for reliable explanations — and coming up dry.”
The “fisheries experts” are having a little trouble figuring it out. I can think of any number of strong possible explanations as to why the salmon population has plunged, including…. the fisheries!?!
No, the salmon have not vanished “without a trace.” Between the direct human action of harvesting and the less direct (but probably more devastating) human-caused environmental stresses that have put fragile ecological systems at risk all over the world, the “trace” is certain: humanist-capitalism.
I would like to give mild praise to Felicity Barringer of the Times for resisting the typical urge to frame the issue as newsworthy solely because of its economic impact.
