We’ve recently been highlighting the web of events and issues surrounding rising food prices/scarcity. Add another unforeseen consequence to the firestorm, which includes already-excessive livestock growth, burgeoning demand for meat in places like China and India, biofuel use and growth mandates, and so on, with the ubiquitous undercurrent of global warming: a new level of social acceptance and financial convenience for genetically-modified crops. Of course, deep uncertainty remains about the full consequences of their large-scale implementation on global/local environments and their inhabitants.
Notice how these problems are never really solved — and how new problems routinely spring up — through enactment of the humanist mindset and the use of devastating technological means.
