Maureen Dowd is an idiot (but you already knew that). →
Maureen Dowd, on Barack Obama:
…This is clearly a man who can’t wait to get back to his organic scrambled egg whites. That was made plain with his cri de coeur at the Glider Diner in Scranton when a reporter asked him about Jimmy Carter and Hamas.
“Why” he pleaded, sounding a bit, dare we say, bitter, “can’t I just eat my waffle?”
His subtext was obvious: Why can’t I just be president? Why do I have to keep eating these gooey waffles and answering these gotcha questions and debating this gonzo woman?
Political gossip columnist Maureen Dowd’s attempts to emasculate male Democratic candidates — and then spend the next 3 years complaining about their victorious opponent, who she and other serial emasculators help elect — go back to the 2000 election, and many other media critics have written more deeply and knowingly about it.
But the above passage struck me as particularly laughable. A reporter asks Barack Obama a question about a non-story, setting a trap for him to make the unforgivable mistake of presenting a well reasoned opinion on anything at all, and Obama responds, “Why can’t I just eat my waffle?” And Dowd’s interpretation of the “obvious” subtext was, “Why can’t I just be president?” It’s just idiotic.
Also note her use of the phrase “cri de coeur” while attempting to taint Obama as out of touch with the lowest common denominator American (LCDA) — as if being in touch with the LCDA would be a good thing.
Naturally, Dowd’s column currently sits atop the Times’ list of most emailed articles.

Never leave home without it.
