A word for the biggest spill victims

Last night Obama gave his most important speech to date regarding the Gulf oil spill. I watched the whole thing, and I kept wondering: when is he going to mention the hundreds of thousands if not millions of non-human animals who have lost their lives or their ability to live healthfully? And then he did, for just one brief moment. That’s right, one word (‘wildlife’) out of 2,816 words — one second out of seventeen minutes — in a speech about the biggest oil spill in U.S. history. In the next breath, he was reemphasizing the oh-so-terrible plights of human seafood industry workers — those who make their ‘livings’ by needlessly taking the lives of others — and implying that the environment is important mostly so humans have something to exploit.

A disgraceful, cowardly choice.
